Fuel is a big, controllable cost. These are the tactics that actually move the needle, minus the myths.
Buy where it's cheaper (this is the big one)
The largest, easiest saving is simply filling up at cheaper stations. Prices vary a lot — supermarket and edge-of-town sites usually undercut motorway and airport stations by a wide margin. Use the map to compare recent prices near you and along your route, and make cheaper stations your default rather than a lucky accident.
Don't run to empty
An empty tank forces you to buy wherever you happen to be, often at a premium. Keeping a comfortable buffer means you always have the choice to wait for a cheaper station. Planning beats desperation every time.
Drive a little smoother
- Ease off the accelerator and brake. Smooth, anticipatory driving can cut consumption meaningfully.
- Slow down on the motorway. Wind resistance rises sharply with speed; a modest reduction saves real fuel.
- Lose dead weight and drag. Empty the boot of what you don't need and remove roof racks when unused.
- Keep tyres properly inflated. Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance and wear.
Skip the premium grade unless your car needs it. For most vehicles, higher-octane fuel offers no benefit and just costs more. Check your handbook for the minimum grade and use that.
Use loyalty and app discounts
Fuel loyalty schemes, supermarket points and station apps can beat a lower shelf price elsewhere. It's worth having the one or two that fit your usual route, but don't drive out of your way to use them — the detour can erase the discount.
Plan trips together
Cold engines use more fuel, so combining errands into one trip is more efficient than several short cold starts. Plan your route, plan your fuel stop into it, and you'll spend less without thinking about it.
Report prices to help the next driver
The cheaper-station strategy only works if price data stays fresh. Reporting what you paid keeps the map accurate — and everyone's comparisons honest, including yours next time.
