Misfuelling is one of those mistakes that is cheap to fix and expensive to get wrong, and the difference between the two is usually a single decision: whether or not the engine gets started. If you have realised at the pump, you are in the best possible position. Here is what is happening chemically, and what to do in what order.
Stop, and leave the key alone
The single most useful thing you can do is nothing mechanical. Do not start the engine. On many modern cars, do not even turn the ignition to the "on" position, because that can run the electric fuel pump and begin drawing the wrong fuel out of the tank and into the fuel lines.
While the wrong fuel is still sitting in the tank, the fix is a drain and flush. Once it has been pumped through the injection system, the job changes from draining a tank to cleaning or replacing components — a completely different scale of work.
Tank only: inconvenient. Fuel system: expensive. Everything below is about keeping the problem in the tank.
Petrol in a diesel engine — the serious one
This is the more damaging direction, and it is also the more common one, for a physical reason we will come to. Diesel is not just a fuel in a diesel engine; it is also the lubricant for the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors, which run to very fine tolerances.
Petrol acts as a solvent. Introduced into a diesel system, it thins the diesel and strips away that lubricating film, so the pump's closely-fitted metal surfaces begin to work against each other with far less protection than they were designed to have. The wear that follows does not stay in one place: fine metal debris is carried downstream through the system toward the injectors. That is why a petrol-in-diesel event that reaches the pump can turn into a repair involving the pump, the injectors and the lines together.
Diesel in a petrol engine — usually less severe
Diesel in a petrol car is generally the less costly mistake. A petrol engine ignites its fuel with a spark, and diesel does not respond to that the way petrol does. The typical result is an engine that cranks badly, misfires, runs roughly and produces heavy white smoke, rather than one that quietly destroys itself.
The damage here is more about fouling than about wear — diesel coats the spark plugs and can pass unburnt into the exhaust, where it is unkind to the catalytic converter. It still needs draining, but the outcome is usually better than the reverse case.
Why petrol-in-diesel happens more often
It is largely a matter of nozzle geometry. Diesel dispensing nozzles are made physically wider than unleaded petrol nozzles, and petrol cars have correspondingly narrower filler necks. Putting a diesel nozzle into a petrol car is awkward and often simply will not seat.
The reverse has no such obstacle. A narrower petrol nozzle slides into a diesel filler neck without resistance, so nothing about the physical act warns you that anything is wrong. The protection built into the system only works in one direction.
Read the label, not the colour
Pump and handle colours are not standardised worldwide — a colour that means diesel in one country can mean something else across the border, which makes colour a genuinely unreliable habit for anyone who drives internationally.
Across the EU and a number of neighbouring countries, fuel dispensers carry standardised shape-coded labels instead, and these are worth learning because they do not change with the brand or the country:
- Circle — petrol, marked E5, E10 and similar, where the number indicates the maximum share of ethanol.
- Square — diesel, marked B7, B10, XTL and similar.
- Diamond — gaseous fuels, marked H2, CNG, LPG and similar.
The matching label is also placed near your car's filler cap. Shape first, then the code — that check survives crossing a border.
The order of steps
- Do not start the engine, and avoid turning the ignition on.
- If you are still on the forecourt, tell the staff. Stations deal with this regularly and will know local recovery options.
- Move the car clear of the pump without starting it — push it, or have it moved.
- Arrange a fuel drain. Recovery services and mobile fuel-drain specialists both handle this routinely.
- Note how much of the wrong fuel went in. A small splash into a nearly full tank of the correct fuel is a different conversation from a full tank of the wrong one, and the person advising you will ask.
If the engine has already been started and run, stop driving as soon as you can do so safely and switch it off. Continuing to drive circulates the wrong fuel further through the system, and every additional minute makes the job larger.
Preventing the repeat
Misfuelling clusters around changed routine: a hire car, a courtesy car, a recently changed vehicle, an unfamiliar station, or refuelling while distracted or in a hurry. If you have just changed cars — particularly if you have switched fuel type — the habit you built over years is now working against you.
Two things help more than resolutions. Devices called misfuelling preventers can be fitted to a diesel filler neck to reject a narrower petrol nozzle. And a deliberate one-second pause to read the label on the nozzle before it goes in costs nothing and interrupts autopilot exactly when autopilot is the problem.
