Fuel stations are, statistically, very safe places. The rules posted on the forecourt exist because a small number of specific things have gone wrong repeatedly — and it is worth knowing which ones are real risks and which are folklore, because the folklore tends to distract from the genuine hazard.

The risk is the vapour, not the liquid

Everything on this page follows from one fact: it is petrol vapour that ignites, not the liquid in the tank. Vapour is heavier than air, so it pools low and around the filler — which is exactly where your hands are while you refuel. This is why the precautions cluster around the moment of filling rather than around the car in general.

Static electricity — the risk people underestimate

The best-documented cause of forecourt fires is not a phone or a stray spark. It is static discharge, and the pattern behind it is remarkably consistent.

A driver starts filling, gets back into the car to wait — often in cold, dry weather — and slides across the seat. That movement builds a static charge on the body. They get out, reach straight for the nozzle, and the charge discharges as a spark at the filler neck, in the middle of the vapour.

The countermeasure is simple and takes a second: stay out of the car while the tank is filling, and if you do get back in, touch a bare metal part of the car door before you touch the nozzle again. That earths you harmlessly, well away from the vapour.

What about mobile phones? Being honest about this matters: the "phone ignites fuel vapour" story is not supported by the incident record. The reason to put the phone away is attention — you are handling a flammable liquid and should be watching what you are doing. Treating the phone as the danger distracts from static, which genuinely is one.

Engine off, and why it is not just bureaucracy

Switching the engine off removes several ignition sources at once — hot exhaust components, electrical activity, and in some cases a running cooling fan that can move vapour around. It also means the car cannot move if something is knocked or misjudged.

The same reasoning covers no smoking and no naked flames. These are not cautious over-reach; they are the small set of rules that address the specific way forecourt fires actually start.

Stop at the click

The automatic cut-off is not a suggestion, and overriding it causes two separate problems.

The first is spillage: fuel that comes back up the filler neck ends up on the forecourt, on your hands, and evaporating into exactly the air you are standing in.

The second is mechanical. Modern cars capture fuel vapour rather than venting it, and that system is designed to handle vapour, not liquid. Forcing extra fuel in after the cut-off can push liquid into it. The result is a repair that costs considerably more than the small amount of fuel you gained.

Carrying fuel in a container

This is where casual handling causes the most avoidable incidents:

  • Use a container approved for fuel. Not a water bottle, not a general-purpose canister. Approved containers manage pressure and vapour; improvised ones do not.
  • Put the container on the ground to fill it — never in the boot, on a seat, or on a plastic load-bed liner. A container standing on an insulating surface can hold a static charge with nowhere to go, and filling it is exactly when vapour is present.
  • Keep the nozzle in contact with the container opening and fill slowly. Splashing fuel generates static.
  • Leave room for expansion and close it properly. Fuel expands as it warms.
  • Transport it secured and upright, ideally not in the passenger cabin.

Local rules on how much fuel you may carry and in what containers vary by country, and stations may refuse to fill something that does not comply.

Diesel on the ground is a slip hazard

One that gets overlooked because it is undramatic: spilled diesel is slippery, persistently so, and does not evaporate away like petrol. On a wet forecourt a diesel spill is a genuine hazard for pedestrians and for two-wheeled vehicles. If you spill, report it rather than walking away — the station has the materials to deal with it.

If something does go wrong

Every forecourt has an emergency stop that cuts power to all the pumps, and staff are trained on it. If there is a fire, do not attempt to move your car: leave it, get clear, and alert the staff. Cars are replaceable and insured; standing next to a fuel pump to save one is not a trade worth making.
