Since April 2015 a law, Lei n.º 6/2015, has required every filling station in mainland Portugal to sell simple petrol and simple diesel, without the additives the brands charge extra for. A station may sell only simple fuels; it may not sell only premium ones. So there is always a cheaper grade on the board, even at a big-brand station.
Under Decreto-Lei n.º 243/2008, every licensed station in mainland Portugal must tell the energy directorate, DGEG, about each price change before it applies, along with its location, opening hours and services. DGEG publishes the result on its portal, Preços dos Combustíveis Online, which is the official place to compare station prices in Portugal.
