How to read these numbers

  • One average per country. Each government reports its national average to the Commission, which publishes all of them once a week. It is not the price at any one station: on a motorway it is usually higher, at a supermarket forecourt often lower.
  • Taxes included. Most of the gap between two countries is duty and VAT, not the fuel itself. Why fuel prices differ across European borders explains how.
  • Euros per litre everywhere. Countries outside the euro area report in their own currency; the Commission converts them, and the converted figure is the one shown here.
  • A gap is a gap. A week with no published figure for a country leaves the line empty. Nothing is estimated or carried over.

Where these figures come from

European Commission, Weekly Oil Bulletin: consumer prices of petroleum products including duties and taxes, Euro-super 95 and automotive gas oil, published in euros per 1000 litres. Reproduction is authorised provided the source is acknowledged. Refuelia divides the Commission’s figures by 1000 and works out the weekly changes; nothing else is altered. History before this page began comes from the Commission’s own price-history file; each new bulletin is added within about six hours of this site next reading it.
