What it is
A Type 2 socket with two DC pins added below it. Europe calls it CCS2; North America calls the older Type 1 version CCS1. The two are not interchangeable, and a European CCS2 cable will not fit a CCS1 car.
Speed you will actually see
Public CCS posts run from 50 kW to 350 kW. The number on the post is a ceiling, not a promise: a cold battery, a full one, or a shared cabinet with another car all pull the real rate down.
Who needs it
Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, Hyundai, Kia, Ford, Polestar, Volvo and most others. Tesla in Europe uses CCS2 natively; in North America Teslas use NACS and need an adapter.
What the number above does not say
The count comes from connector tags in OpenStreetMap. A charging point whose socket has never been tagged is not in it, so the real total is higher than the figure shown — we would rather undercount than claim a socket nobody recorded. Availability is a separate question again: a mapped CCS post is not a working one, which is why every pin carries the last time a driver confirmed it, and says so plainly when nobody has.
Using it on the road
Filter the map to CCS and every pin left is one your car can take DC from. Reading the map needs no account; confirming that a charger worked is one tap and stays anonymous.
