What it is
A seven-pin AC connector, standard on every EV sold in Europe since 2014 and on the wall of almost every public AC point. The socket is untethered as often as not, so many drivers carry their own cable.
Speed you will actually see
3.7 kW on a single phase, 11 kW or 22 kW on three. Your car, not the post, is usually the limit: plenty of EVs accept only 7.4 kW AC however big the charger is.
Who needs it
Effectively everyone in Europe. Even a car that fast-charges on CCS uses the same physical inlet for Type 2 AC.
What the number above does not say
The count comes from connector tags in OpenStreetMap. A charging point whose socket has never been tagged is not in it, so the real total is higher than the figure shown — we would rather undercount than claim a socket nobody recorded. Availability is a separate question again: a mapped Type 2 post is not a working one, which is why every pin carries the last time a driver confirmed it, and says so plainly when nobody has.
Using it on the road
Filter to Type 2 and you see the points that will fill the car while it is parked anyway. Reading the map needs no account; confirming that a charger worked is one tap and stays anonymous.
