TotalEnergies stations, and how many are counted

The company renamed itself in 2021 and OpenStreetMap has been catching up ever since. Both Total and TotalEnergies are live tags, and in Pakistan the forecourts are tagged طوطال. Counting those as three companies would have produced three pages that each undercounted one.

Counted, not estimated

Across the 213 cities Refuelia counts, at least 230 forecourts are tagged TotalEnergies in OpenStreetMap, in 9 countries. At least, because only the six commonest chains of each city are stored — a TotalEnergies that is seventh in its city is not in this number.

A brand tag is also not a promise the forecourt is open: where a driver has checked recently the map says when, and where nobody has, it says that instead of guessing.

One chain, several spellings

This is the ordinary condition of crowd-mapped data, not a fault in it. A mapper writes what is on the sign, and the sign in Marseille is not the sign in Karachi. Refuelia keeps a list of which strings mean the same chain, and that list is checked against the live map rather than maintained from memory.

France is where this map knows the most

French pump prices are published per station by the government, continuously, and Refuelia reads that feed directly. So on a French TotalEnergies you can see today’s diesel price with the hour it was set — and whether the forecourt two streets away is cheaper. That is not available everywhere, and where it is not, the map says nothing rather than guessing.

Yes. They are counted together, and the older tag is not treated as a separate chain.

Are the French prices official?
They come from the French government open data feed of pump prices, with the timestamp the retailer submitted. Refuelia does not adjust them.
